The word 'Table' is an English Noun referring to an object used in western culture throughout history for the support of paper for writing, food consumption, and many other human tasks. A table is usually recognised with having a lower support (commonly four 'legs'), that lead up to a wider, flat base used solely for storage or support, it is often made out of wood, metal or plastic, with many designs and styles.

I'm not sure where your going with this but objects are what people perceive them to be, if someone tells your your sitting on a table, you will then go and find a chair, because that is proper.

Crazy, but true.

You can't exclusively define a table. They can serve multiple purposes, and those purposes overlap. I can do everything on my lap that I can do on a table.

at best, thats a very clever way of saying absolutley fuck all.   (its pretty obvoius that a cat would never be anything but a cat to be called and considered a cat)

at worst it is compleltly incorrect.

suppose I have a magical table, that has all the qualities of a table, yet, if it should ever choose to do so (this table has a mind of its own) can transform into a non-table (eg, an Ipod)

is it a table?

--yes?

is haveing a mind and a the ability to transform into Ipods the qualities of normal tables?

--no?

then how can it be a table?   (i'm using your defintion of a table)

Aristotelean logic anyone?  What is the function of table?  The function is for one inanimate object to hold up other inanimate objects.  But it must be able to hold up all phases of matter not just say solid hats like a hat rack.  It should be stable and hard to knock over, and function as a good place to eat, being comfortable to be around.  So this function is tableness, or the form of table and anything that adheres to it closely is table.  Least way I think that is how he would answer it.
