I'm not saying that I'm not guilty of this, but when someone makes an eHelp that has their name on it, wouldn't it be so much better to PM them when you don't have anything really meaningful to give them?

If all you can do is give a bit of support and hardly any answers, why take up one of their two replies (unless it's already out of the new section). Having the eHelps leaving the main page after two replies makes it somewhat important that the two replies it gets there are quality, because the chance that they get more replies drops drastically.

I'm not saying that these "I'm not exactly sure how to help you, but..." replies aren't helpful, but a reply from someone who does know how to help would be so much more helpful.

How do you guys feel about PMing members (that have their name show up) with the simpler responses, at least until they're off the front page?

I often PM members saying "look, I don't wanna take up an eHelp reply because I don't know much but.."

They've told me to submit it as a reply so they can rate it before.

I never did.

I generally PM members in regards to not knowing specifically what advice to give them.

I usually tell them "Even though i cant give you much advice at the moment, I'm here for you and you can PM me any time you want" or, like you suggested, i just give a small section of advice and we could chat about it (which you obviously can't do with ehelps)

I'd be surprised if any SL actually thought their reply weren't "anything really meaningful." Yeah, more thoughtful replies should be encouraged, but if somebody replies to an ehelp they're probably trying to help as much as they can.

The only time I ever make a reply like that is when it's someone I know really well and I know they just want a hug. I always try and include some advice in the actual ehelp, though, and in those cases, I'd follow it up witn PMs anyway.

As much as they can. Many times, SLs acknowledge that they aren't really knowledgeable in a subject and are doing what they can.

Oh really? I haven't noticed that. I guess you have a point there.

Me too.
Speaking of which, I haven't replied to your eHelp. God I'm such a lazy arse. Tomorrow, I promise.

The thing is, with most replies it's not so much the advice but the support. Most of the advice can be looked up anyway, but it's the support that counts. Ok, that was messed up - the advice is just as important. However, with a lot of the members, most of the time they already know most of it, they just needed to be affirmed. Um. I do see your point however. Only when I submitted an eHelp, I really preferred having the SL submit it rather than PM it.

Meh, I don't know.
