No. Macros are completely different (and macros have evolved to form VisualBasic which is far more advanced) Automator is more of a general automation application for various software, and system functions and you don't write the code itself, it's all GUI based. Macros are used more actually for excel and within Office than anything else.
If you wanted a comparison, you could loosely use Apple's AppleScript to compare to VB/Macros, but even then, they are still different by a long ways.
