If someone is clearly religious am I allowed to talk about it and give them my opinion? I realise that it is extremely delicate, and I'm not sure. I'm not even sure if my take on things is correct.

Oh, and this same topic has two votes to delete - I disagree. The topic is 'suicide?' and evidently the support leaders who voted it to be deleted assumed it was an eHelp contemplating suicide. If they'd taken the time to actually read it then they would see that it is NOT about that, it is regarding a family member who commit suicide.

So two points to ponder.
1. How to address the eHelp and
2. To everyone, please read before voting delete.

I think on the matter of the religious ehelp, we should just answer the questions we're presented with, so if somebody asks, "What are your views on my religious standpoint?" then feel free to answer it in any way that seems necessary to you, but if their problem is "My mum tells me i have to go to church and i don't want to because i don't believe in God" then you have to understand that the problem is involving the person and their mum, and you can't bring your own views into the equation.

I find that it's quite common for support leaders to just read the title and decide to delete, we do need to read through the person's problem first, make sure we fully understand where the author is coming from, and you may even be able to give fantastic advice.

But unfortunately with this eHelp, we were not given a specific question. It was not about the SLs subjective opinion. It was more a matter of, "Where does x go after suicide?"

I think that in that case, because the member is obviously religious, we should try and answer it from a religious viewpoint. For that reason, I would not answer that ehelp, because I'm a staunch atheist. I know you're Catholic, though, so I reckon that whatever you say is probably all right - it's a question about 'according to Christianity, what happens if X?'.

Like Periwinkle stated, we should answer whatever we're given siding with the author's viewpoints, if they state they're of a certain religion and you can relate to that, then inform them on the facts of what that specific religion teaches.

What did you mean by "talk about it and give them my opinion?"

You can read my response, and I stayed away from anything seriously religious.

But, still. If they are really religious, and they show it, I see no reason why you cannot answer it in such a tone. But, Its really a call for a moderator to make. Ehh.

You obviously wrote much more than I did at that response. I did not even want to go there. I have a hard time replying to any eHelp regarding god, because I am agnostic. I try to view it from a neutral standpoint, and avoid any question involving god, because that is simply not my strong point.

The way I figure, many people take religion seriously, and although I personally do not, I am still able to use that in my help. With some of my friends who were a bit depressed, I would remind them that god cares for them and stuff like that. I knew what was important to them, and if you can use that then why not? Seems a bit crazy to not put in helpful information into a reply simply because it may be seen as touchy to others. If it's helpful then it's helpful, and that's all that really matters to me.

Don't be afraid to use religion, science, beliefs, information, or anything in your replies if you feel it would be helpful, espeically if the OP has shown that they are of a certain mindframe or belief. I mean, that's not to say that every poster would find "god loves you" to be helpful, but if you think they would then why not.
