It is incredibly difficult to manage a diet while in college because food is more easily available during the day and it generally has less nutritional value so you eat more to get full. Additionally, the party scene, and easily available alcohol contribute huge amounts of empty calories (did you know that in many cases, most of the freshman 15 comes from beer?)

There are some important ways to keep healthy while in college while eating campus food. Not only will this help you now but hopefully in the future as well.
1) Try to have balanced meals with lots of protein. If you make sure to have chicken, turkey, beef, pork or low fat cheese with each meal, the high amounts of protein will make you fill faster so you won't need to eat as much. Also, try to include one fruit or veggie with every meal. Nobody likes Brussel sprouts but an apple isn't too bad!
2) When you know you're going to a party where you'll have alcohol, skip desert that day. Eat a full, healthy dinner but instead of cookies or ice cream, know that you're going to get some extra calories from beer or liquor.
3) Don't eat big snacks between meals. If you're hungry, have something small but try to keep on a schedule.
4) If at all possible, don't eat within 3-5 hours of going to sleep (and, sorry, this means no late night pizza orders). Food you eat right before bed will metabolize much more slowly.

My website (in my sig) has some great, healthy, ideas for college food, even things you can make in your microwave. Don't worry, everyone struggles with food at college and the important thing is to feel healthy, not necessarily weigh any specific amount.
