It's America's favorite past time.  People used to say it was baseball, but then they realized all that swinging of phallic objects and comparing home run counts was really basically the same thing.  It's no wonder that things like "batting average" and "1st, 2nd, and 3rd base" translated so easily into sexual euphemisms.
