Yes, there is opponents.  
It's the same as any other sport.  
There are winners and losers.

but they compete only by themselves and not actually against each other: they compete for the subjective opinion of judges and not any tangible mark or position, right?

you win in the same way as you would win a visual art contest, with one producing its own individual effort, and others producing their own individual efforts, and those are then submitted to some body which awards winners based on their subjective opinion.

or am i still uninformed about how competitive cheerleading works?
