Router firmware

I have a Linksys WRT54GS, and am getting a Buffalo router (don't have model on hand).

I'm thinking of using the tomato firmware (third-party) on them, anyone have any advice on this?

Also, any tips on the best way to flash the firmware to the router or things I should watch out for?
