Ok...I'm playing this song (Blues Marx) and there's this section that my band director keeps making us improvise at...I've played sax for a month (I've played clarinet for 6 years tho) and I sort of get the chords at the top...like, G7 and C13 are above the first two measures where we improvise. But when I play G, B, D, and F# (the notes of the G7 chord I think) it sounds wrong...like it's not jazzy enough. What am I doing wrong?

try adding a D# or maybe a C? change the colors of your tone up. try adding some happy/bright colors in with #s, Cs, or Fs. or if it's a bit slower, do some sad/grey colors with Bbs and Ebs. just play around.

Hang on, aren't the notes of the G7 cord G, B, D F, not F#?
The notes of a C7 cord are C, E, G Bb - the seventh has to be a tone lower than the tonic.

When you see G7, that means G dominant 7, not GMaj7.

The chord would be built:

F (Natural)
D (you can throw in Db's here and it'll sound nice and bluesy)
B (Bb will make a more bluesy sound, but it's best used when traveling between notes, like going in a melody:D B Bb A G)
G

You can turn it into a scale and think about writing melodies using only these notes:

G A (Bb) B C (Db) D E F (F# - sparingly, usually only if you're heading straight to the G right above it) and G at the top.

And when it goes to the C13, you would use the same scale, just focus more on the notes of the chord. In other words, you could still use ANY of those notes in the scale, just try and use C E G Bb etc more, to establish a chord.
