it depends on the type of it, really. i'd say that if your really that interested and dedicated, then buying one would be cheaper, though.

Go to your local music store and ask.

I was actually in ours today and overheard a lady wanting to rent her son a french horn. (I'm sure prices range depending on what instrument, but it has to be fairly close.) Her price range was going to end up being around $45/month.

It could possibly be different in your area. Call or go to the place you'll be renting it from and ask them yourself.
