I'm attending the University of Massachusetts Amherst this fall as an incoming freshman. I just got my housing assignment in the mail this afternoon, and I'm pretty psyched that I got my first choice dorm. I'm a bit confused though, because both on the website for housing notifications and on my letter, I have no roommate listed, but I didn't apply for a single dorm.

Do most universities and colleges apply roommates after you receive your housing assignment, or should I already know with both notifications? Not that I'd have a problem with no roommate, but I just find it a bit strange I don't know yet.

Well, it sounds like you were either placed in a single or just have a room to yourself. Your housing should say so or not, if you're living in a single, double, or whatever. If it doesn't look at your bill and see what it says. Another option to check is calling Housing Assignment office and seeing if they could help you out.

I don't know if this would be much help towards, but after searching your school site, I found this Housing Guide;
http://www.housing.umass.edu/pdf/Guide to Residence Halls.pdf

I did find this;

Most students share double or triple rooms. Singles are assigned to students who have lived on campus the longest

I found it on this page; http://www.housing.umass.edu/reshalls/yourroom.html

To me it sounds like you should have a roommate, but to make sure call the Housing office for sure.

Hey, I'm going to be a freshman at Umass Amhest too! Where are you rooming? Ya, you should have been given a roomate. You'll move into your room and then the housing department will dend you a letter and call you in your room to discuss you options. You can either keep your single and pay more or offer to accept a roommate. If you don't respond to either the letter or the call they will automatically bill you for the difference of having a single (reason why they stress to have a dial telephone in your room- not just a cell phone).
