is there any purpose to mounting an iso?
will it allow me to run the mounted iso when i reboot the system?

Its not going to allow you to run the ISO when you reboot.

You will need to burn it for that.

But for instance, if you mount a DVD ISO, you would save yourself time by not having to burn the movie, but you could still watch it.

Yes. If you mount it, it is only active when the OS is loaded. Restarting your computer would clear it.
