That was the opening sentence of the dinner conversation my family had last night. We had relatives over, so they got a nice kick out of it. It amazes my family that I have as many white friends as I do. I don't think anyone in my family has really been close to white people, you know? We're not racist - well, they aren't racist, that's just the way it happens. I live in a small rural southern town, and it's not common for many black people to have a ton of white friends. If they do, they are deemed "acting white" or whatever. Some black guys date white girls, but no white guys date black girls (which I still think the equilibrium is a little off on there, but that's another topic). Interracial relationships are still infrequent. I'm black. I listen to rock aka "white people's music" (although black people created it...). Yes, I know who Giovanni Ribisi and Daniel-Day Lewis are. Yes, I watch "white people" shows (The Office, The OC, etc). Yes, I enjoy a nice indie flick. No, I don't listen to much rap mainstream hip hop is going down the toilet. And yes, I loved Juno. Yes, I hang out with mostly white people. Yes, I have always been one of the few black people in my classes since 6th grade. I mean, that doesn't mean I'm betraying my race. Man, just do you. If you don't want to hang out with other black people you don't have to. There's no point in hanging around people you aren't comfortable with. Just hope that you're not too prejudiced when dealing with your own race, because that's just as bad as being white and racist if not worse.

um races dont own anything. and you cant judge anyone by their race. your just being you its no big deal. your not acting black or white or yellow or any other color/ethnicity

Back in the day their were TONS of black rock musicians. Many people think that white people did still rock. Just like elvis imitating our oldies/soul and somehow he's regarded as the KING.lol. But I don't really care. Just letting you know this belief is not uncommon at all.

So? Few black characters doesn't mean the show or music is aimed at white people or only white people are supposed to be appreciating them. That's fucking stupid.
Thank you very much, someone else realises this. Someone will be talking about a band or something like that, and I'll just jump in the conversation, and they're like, "Wait....how do you know about them?" Because I obviously listen to them just like you do. This is a big deal because? It's weird.
