Sure there isn't a problem with your sound card?

Is the beep you're talking about coming out of the speakers?  Try turning them off/unplugging them and seeing if the beep continues to check.

you might not have one, just onboard sound, but you might want to try and download the sound drivers and see if that fixes the problem

Double check all your sound controls, and make sure you haven't disabled sound on any of the applications you're trying to run.

If that doesn't work, there's probably an issue with your soundcard. What kind of laptop is it?

oh...my bad.  In that case, try plugging in some headphones and see if the sound works through them or not.  also, this is windows right?
