I think you over used the commas there. It should be "I think, therefore I am."

The way you said it doesn't really make sense.

I was never good at that in English class

Well, for one you completely butchered the use of commas, and secondly, it's a philosophical quote, we can interpret it however we see fit.

it's bullshit, thought doesn't necessarily imply one's own existence, your thoughts can be had by something or someone else

i think, therefore something is

would be less shitty

And yet, if your thoughts are held by but one mind, then THAT mind must exist.
It doesn't matter what type of body, or in what reality YOU exist in, you exist. [you subscribe, then, with this theory to a dualist view of existence, as such: even if the physical body is different or non-existent, the mind must still exist.]

It may not be an existence you approve of, or one that is static, but if consciousness exists, so too must something. And if that something thinks in the first person, and identifies itself as "I", then regardless of whatever physical encapsulation it my be held in, it exists.

i think that's a semantic copout, because the something that does exist can contain more than one such self-aware thought process, meaning, what exists is not them

So you are arguing that our existence is really that of an all inclusive multi-conscious being? And that our individual consciousnesses are merely PARTS of this being?

This is your idea of something LESS sucky than "I think, therefore I am"?

Even so, even if our consciousnesses are part of this other being, they are still our consciousnesses. A rock exists as it exists, a tree as it does, and I as I do, If I am a cog in a multi-conscious being, then that is the nature of my existence. WHO I am may change, however "I" never will.

when conversing with a man afflicted with multiple personalities, i don't think the non-dominant ones actually exist

if you would say they do, then we have different notions of existence and this discussion is fruitless and barren, like a lonely old cat lady.

We are not talking about a man with multiple personalities. We are talking about a BEING with multiple CONSCIOUSES.

A man with multiple personalities does not have multiple consciouses, he has multiple expressive states which react to the environment his consciousness exists in. A being with multiple consciouses exists in a whole different level. All consciouses believing itself to exist as itself, with no true conscious of its own [barring the concept of the collective creating a transcended and additive conscious...]

But then we could all really be bacteria of cosmic scale floating around the body of some infinitely large being.

THIS, is what I call masturbatory theorizing.

No offense intended of course.
