About an hour ago, I took the intellectual test, and passed without much difficulty. After looking at the intellectual forum, just because I could, I noticed a lot of people saying they "cheated" on the test because they could look up most of the answers on multiple various websites. Although I would guess that it probably would be hard for there to be such a drastic change in the way the test is conducted, I still find this to be a viable and productive solution. There is 80% multiple choice questions, and 20% of it is like an essay question. I fully agree with the essay question, but the multiple choice questions should either be eliminated as a whole, or changed to more of an opinion format. It doesn't take an intellectually sound person to cheat on a test and look at a dictionary or even look at Wikipedia.org to find their answer. What I propose for a solution would be this: - Instead of being able to give right/wrong answers, testers should have to choose from a few different options, all of which are right, but one option showing more intellectual prowess than the other three. Kind of like the difference between saying, "Yes, that would be okay" and "Yeah, thats good." - The Essay question should be less tester-friendly. If people are given a handful of topics, they have a greater likelihood of rambling on and on about something and covering enough of one topic to sustain as a formidable answer. Instead, create an essay question where they are made to answer both why they should be considered as an intellectual, and what, in their opinion, is the definition of being intellectual. I'm not in any way accusing moderators of being bias towards anyone, nor am I saying that they will, but every moderator obviously has people that he or she talks to and will know. If they are chosen to score the test, there is the possibility of them being bias towards scoring the test for that particular person. Instead, I propose a system where 3 moderators are selected at random to grade the test, each getting 1 vote of pass or fail, obviously using majority ruling. I realize that not all moderators are on at all hours of the day. To fix this, I propose the installation a 24 hour waiting period where the moderators have time to log-on, and score whatever tests they have been selected to score. If one or more votes are not sent in by the time the 24 hour waiting period has elapsed, than another moderator is selected at random to take their place. Obviously the test can still be "fixed," but in order to do this, you would basically have to test your odds again and again, or befriend a large number of moderators in hopes that their opinion can be swayed by personal connections, which obviously if they have a large number of moderators as friends, a lot of things are going to go their way that might not normally. To help ease the strain on the moderators, I also suggest creating a 2 part test. Testers are to complete a certain number of questions, and if they score high enough, THEN they may proceed to the essay question(s). This will help to rid the people that will try and guess their way through it, as well as provide more legitimate candidates for testing instead of anyone who wants a cool icon in their profile. Just my ideas for making things a little more smoothly, I understand this plan, like most others, has flaws, but at least in my opinion, this would be a lot harder to fake than it currently is.

I thought the questions were 20% and the essay was 80%.

I agree, this sounds a hell of a lot better than the set up they have now. I mean, I didn't cheat or anything, and I don't to any mods, but it was just too easy.

this is all well and good, but have you ever spent any TIME in the intellectual forum? It's fucking dead anyways. If you want to have an intellectual conversation LW isn't the place to go, really.

Well as far as the intellectual forum being dead, its still nice to know that there are people even on here that don't have the mental capacity of a toothpick. It's like having a drivers license if you don't intend to drive for a while. Even though you're not going to use it, its still nice to have.
