A stock photo is a photo that has been submitted to a stock image website or collection where any person may use the photo for what they wish to do. Sometimes you have to pay for using it, other times you don't.

Royalty free images mean that you don't have to pay the owner if you're using it for commercial purposes (if you're making money off the photo, such as in a magazine). There may be a charge for using it, but there won't be an extra charge so that the owner doesn't get a slice of your profits.
