The french apparently "betrayed" americans in the past during support for a war or something like that. I was never good in history.

Are you talking about the Freedom Fries thing that just happened? I don't think that has anything to do with the French/English beef.

Something just happened like that? No, I was referring to way back when. It was in history books.

But then they talked tough like, "Zer was nozing we cud 'ave don against zese crazy nazis!"

Heh, this isn't so much the reason for animosity between the UK and France as much as it is the reason for animosity between the whole world and France.  France has always had a very protective policy for things such as its language. There are French laws which limit the amount of foreign songs played on the radio for example. The French have had a foreign policy since Charles de Gaulle of trying to assert their power and be allied with the US and UK, yet at the same time be independent.  Of course, the French tend to go a little overboard at times...

Honestly, any real tension between England and France has diminished since the Napoleonic Wars.  Most of their tension came from being two competing powers in Western Europe and abroad, and after the Napoleonic Wars, the UK surpassed France by quite a bit in terms of economic and military power.  Despite whatever resentment the French might have had towards the English for it (and vice versa for other reasons), they have been allies for the most part for about the last 200 years or so.

Really? Still? That's really gay. Maybe soemoen wants to do a foreign channel.

People are like that in Quebec too I think.

Well, a few years ago. Ok.

It's a protective policy that is a reaction for the perceived fear of the English language's influence around the world. They don't want the French language to give way to English, so they do everything they can to keep it. It's rather unnecessary if you ask me, but it's their country.

People are like that in Quebec too I think.

Quebec is arguably just as protective as France is, probably moreso if you ask me. In Quebec, there are laws in which you cannot live in the province unless you are fluent in French. Unlike France, Canada is split between English and French speakers, so Quebec feels even more threatened by its French characteristic giving way to English, just as New Orleans did when the US bought it.

But I was just wondering what excuse their using now... like Americans who dislike Mexicans in general will say it's because of illegal immigration, etc.

Like Barnabas said, bad blood fuels hatred in later generations.  Bad experiences between each other during the High Middle Ages will fuel tension and hatred between each other during the colonial period, and that will only repeat itself in later generations.

Honestly, though, most people from England that I've known don't really hate the French at all (at least nothing like some Americans may hate Mexicans - and be sure you don't confuse illegal immigrants with Mexicans by the way).  They might think the French are snobs and the French might scoff at the English for some reason or another, but a lot of European nations are like that today.  If you ever get a Swede and a Dane in the same room together, be prepared for a lot of similarly natured jokes.

Yes I know that, but I guess I worded my OP wrong. I was asking for the excuse, really.

=/

My friend went to France I think the year 2000 and the people thought her family was English so they couldn't catch a cab or anything and some were rude to them or something until they said they were American. It'd probably be the same if they said they were American now, lulz.

About the illegal immigrants thing, a lot of people say they hate illegal immigrants but not Mexicans, but they'll see a Mexican and refer to them as an illegal despite knowing nothing about them or if they're legal or not.

So you're saying that's what it's over still?

No, not really. I'm telling you that when we think of hate between England and France that this is where it all really started - which is the answer to what you asked in your OP, is it not?

Oh yeah I guess so.

I don't mind the Mexicans coming over here, but they should do it legally and regardless of whether they DO come over legally or not, they should work hard to prove themselves. That's what Americans had to do to build the foundation of this (supposedly great) country so anyone who comes over should work just as hard to keep it going.

And I'm sure I'm not the only one who thinks this.

Was it for cabs, restaurants, and hotel bellhops?  I'll give you a big hint - English people do not tip worth a damn, whereas Americans tip quite generously (which is due to the whole difference of the culture of tipping itself between the US and UK).  The French find it rude when you aren't perfectly fluent in their language, but they're willing to overlook it if you slip them a nice tip (and in Europe, tips are generally included on the bill, so they like it all the more).  As a result, people tend to love serving Americans whereas they don't really enjoy serving English and other people.

I know, and it often works in the reverse to.  I'll say I hate illegal immigration, and people will try to spin it around and say I hate Mexicans.  It's an important distinction to make.

You're one to talk, you probably live mainly off your parents and don't pay taxes. Moocher.

The country was built on the backs of slaves.

Oh and again, why not hold people responsible for their own actions? Millions of people shouldn't need to "prove themselves" for you. Everyone should work hard, not just Mexican immigrants.

And you say "legals or illegals should work hard" but when illegals work hard it gets people more mad because they're often forced to work below the minimum wage.

Oh yeah? I thought there was something fishy about that, because even then I'd been put under the impression that we weren't the most respected country over in Europe so I raised an eyebrow at that. Sounded pretty weird, now it makes more sense.

I think they said something about asking for the time and people not telling them until they said they were American though. Not sure, I was only like ten then and this is all second-hand.

And then people will spin THAT around and call anyone who defends illegal immigrants a racist because they've probably experienced what you just said. It goes in all directions really. I don't think race should be a part of the immigration debates.

When it comes to colonization the English & French were pretty much trying to colonize the same places (where Spain didn't)...so they fought. And England won.
