I work in a supermarket bakery. The other day when I was working I was scheduled until 6 PM. We were expecting a shipment in early afternoon to finish the set up and stock the front. It came in late, a little after five, and we didn't finish putting it away until 6. So I knew that my shift was over but there were things that absolutely had to be done after it came in. Plus a list of other things they wanted me to do. So I got done at about quarter of ten. Now when I walk in today they basically imply that I was trying to screw them, working longer than I was scheduled to.
I think you did the right thing though. It shows you have great work ethic. If they have a problem with you working enough to get things done, then leave when you're done with your shift, on the minute.
