I would say most of the existential and metaphyiscal theories that we have today were developed trying to figure out "what happens when you die" and "why are we here"
which is essentially the questions that religion tries to "answer".

you did what? I don't care what you did in school. I'm TELLING you that existentialist and metaphysical philosophies are all based on the same questions as religion, which is why they are so similar.
Religion is not only a spiritual stance, it is a philosophical viewpoint as well.
