i've always wondered what happened with items that were returned. say that someone returned a mascara because she was allergic to it. would they just throw it out? i mean they can't sell back something that's out of the container and used, right? so what happens?

They report it as damaged so that their inventory won't be all screwed up. Then they throw it out.

Nah, I don't really know. It depends on the item. I think if you return a matress, it has to go through the entire cleaning process again (And if there's any stains on the mattress, they won't let you return it).
Some items can't be returned once they are open as well, some places may not allow you to return something like mascara...
But otherwise, many places just state that it's used, and reduce the price... some people might buy it anyway.
It depends on the item... I work at Guest Services, so I deal with stuff like that... If the item is broken, then we send it back to the manufacturer. If it's just a return, it could be that it'd be defaulted out, and we would throw it out... Some things do end up going back on shelves, but stuff like that does get thrown out...
