What do you have to do/where do you have to go in order to get a loan without needing a cosigner? Is it as simple as having a credit history? If so, do you have to have a year's worth or what are we looking at? My Dad was making payments on what my school didn't give me in loans and scholarships but has since decided that he wants nothing to do with me. He's tried to control everything between where I go to school, what I go for, what I do with my own money, who I date, where I work, how long I should work during the summer, etc. He even went so far as to try and push me to apply for jobs in PA...from all the way in NY... He's always been incredibly controlling, he won't even tell my Mom what kind of money we have or even if he's sick (he stopped drinking a year or two ago which is odd...even after he wrecked his car driving drunk and nearly killed himself, he kept drinking...so we sort of think it's a medical issue and any time he's needed to see a doctor or take medication, he's refused to state why so my Mom's stopped asking). I never wanted his help but couldn't tell him why or he probably would have smashed me one -- "Dad, I don't trust you and don't want to owe you that sort of money, leave me alone." So, yeah...I'm worried because he kind of ditched me last minute but if I can figure this out somehow, I can finally start to break free from him and the abuse and stress. I'll be 20 in two weeks. My Mom and I have an account together so I was wondering if maybe anything that was paid using our credit card would count as credit history for me. The account is almost a year old. Not sure if any other info would help or not.

It's not possible in this lifetime, I'm afraid.

She's not willing to help, she helped me get an $8,000 loan with an amazing interest rate (less than 1%), and is still bitching about it. Honestly, she has no clue what she's blabbing about. She thinks my Dad was making payments on my loans when he wasn't, he was making payments on money that hadn't been loaned to me rather than finding loans elsewhere. She also thinks you basically gotta pay that $8,000 as soon as you get out of school and in one chunk. And according to my Gram, who I used to think was relatively bright, my Mom is right -- she should never have cosigned my loan and thinks that's stupid. Okay, so...kids can't get loans on their own...and it's stupid for a parent to cosign...so only rich kids can afford to go to school now?... Post edited at 8:47 am on July 26, 2008 by Majo
