That should be fine.

It will run it, but not amazing.

If you dont game much, that should handle things though.

what does 'not amazing' mean? like i dont care about high settings or anything but i need it to run reasonably smooth.

Actually that machine will probably dominate those games. If you are into saving money you could probably 'downgrade' (i use the term loosely) to maybe an E6600 or E7200. Quad is overkill.

I'm not to clued up on Dells options, as I personally think their computers suck donkey balls and hence have no interest in them.

The XPS series is actually pretty good.

Just took a quick look at Dells website, I must say i disagree with you. There top of the line only uses an 8800GT (my card that ive had for at least 8 months now), whereas we are at the end of Nvidias 9xxx series now, and the rest of them use shitty old Radeon cards... I'll throw together a little something later when ive got more time.

Im not saying the XPS is for the hardcore gamer, but they are good, solid machines that are great for someone who needs a rig that will run the latest games, but doesnt game a whole lot.

And actually, the latest card is the GTX 280.

Honestly though, the 9 series cards are equivalent of the 8800. The 9600 actually scores LOWER on some benchmarks, and the 9800 GX2 is just two 9600s in SLI, which could be achieved by putting two 8800s in SLI as well.

The only difference will probably be in the AGEIA update. Something tells me that the new series cards will run it a little better.

I just failed, missed the last 2 of their computers on the list, 9800GX2 in one of them is nice, but the price isn't. And no their latest card is the 9800GTX+, I'm well aware of the GTX260 and 280, fuck i build computers for a hobby.

The 9600GT is slightly slower than the 8800GT, thats a given, look at the second number in both cards, then look at Nvidias card history. You aren't telling me anything new here. And SLi brings its own problems, more power usage, more heat etc.

Ill be back later to discuss this more if you wish, but ill sum up here. I don't believe Dell makes solid computers. They use cheap powersupplies and the cheapest components, I hear many horror stories about failures. Also, for the price you pay for them, you don't get a whole lot of performance.

Me love you long time.

how hard is it to throw a computer together yourself? like the actual physically putting it together, not deciding which parts to use and shit. i've only ever installed RAM and a graphics card before.

You obviously havent used a Dell in several years. Yes, they use OEM power supplies, what OEM doesnt? Their power supplies (particularly in the XPS series) are adequate, and run perfectly fine. They have enough room for expansion.

You must remember that someone buying a computer (as opposed to building one) isnt going to be upgrading it to much. I havent heard of a serious failure in a Dell in a long time either. (customer support is a nightmare though, but it is with most computer companies).

Oh, and about the GTX 280. It is out, and it is the most powerful card out (from nVidia at least). It may not be the newest card out though. (I believe the 9800GTX+ was released about a week later).

The 9800GTX+ however simply uses a 55nm GPU. This runs with less power, therefore less heat. It is in no way more powerful than the GTX280 though. It is faster than the G92 that the 8800-9800 were previously based on, and it does run slightly cooler, allowing for more over clocking.

I've never used a Dell. I was probably a little hasty before in my statements (been arguing in another thread right before posting in this one lol). I'll retract my previous statements about all Dells sucking, its just my personal point of view that you could go to a local store and have them build you a better computer for the same price as getting a Dell.

Yep the 280 is the most powerful, but we haven't even got the 9800gtx+ here yet. Was just saying we were at the end of that series (i.e what i forsee to be the last 9 series just come out and still not available here yet), and Dell is still using 8 series cards. Heck they still are using 3850/70s and the 4xxx series cards are out! And the 4850s are benching faster than the 9800GTXs, and are a heck of a lot cheaper. Nvidia need to cut their pricing quicksmart if they want to compete, but thats another thread.

To conclude, for most people you are right, Dells are probably fine, I just wouldn't buy one.

That system looks fine. Try and get a ati 4850 or 4870 since they are the best bang for buck at the moment.

If you were to build your own and want to get the best for your money i would go with a E8400 since these are cheaper than the q6600 but are much better for gaming (Games lack support for more than 2 cores, plus the e8400 is stock clocked higher and can overclock higher).

Here's a little graph showing gpu performance on cod4. As you can see considering the price the best card here for price/performance is the 4870 followed by the 4850.

(By the way if anyone plans to throw the fanboy card at me i've usually stuck to the greenside, having owned 2 9600GTs and a nvidia edition stacker 830.)
