 you said that he "doesn't know if there is a god or not". now, if you were to say that "bob doesn't believe there is a god whatsoever" that would make him an atheist. if he is unsure, that means that part of him believes there is, and another part of him doubts there is a god. thus making him an agnostic. shut the fuck up.

Do you want to throw insults around or be civil? This is an honest question--I'd be happy to have a civilized discussion of terms, and I'd be just as happy to flame, so I'll leave that call to you. I'll keep this post civil and, should you decide that we should hurl insults at eachother over the interweb, my future responses will be full of swears and implications that you have a wildly sub-standard IQ, ect.

We don't know if Bob is an agnostic. Agnosticism refers not to whether or not there is a god, but to wether or not we can have absolute knowledge of a god or not. Bob can believe that absolute knowledge is possible but he doesn't have it, meaning that he is not agnostic even though he doesn't know.

Atheism refers to a lack of belief. This can be an active disbelief, such as your example of Bob not believing in god, or it can be a passive lack of belief. If you don't know whether or not there is a god, you are an atheist, because you do not have a belief in god. All agnostics are either atheists or theists.

This is semantics. You're picking on the definitions exactly. Atheism can be explained as the rejection of the existence of Gods, for example. In this sense Bob couldn't be an atheist because he hasn't rejected the idea explcitly, he is unsure. He believes the possibility could exist (or so I inferred) which means he cannot be an Atheist.

In simple Agnostic definitions Bob is Agnostic.

The point I underlined illustrates how this isn't semantics. Atheism is often misrepresented, and this is one such instance. Even Richard Dawkins admits that there could be a god, because agnosticism is the most logical stance for something that we genuinely cannot have absolute knowledge of. Dawkins is also, of course, an outspoken atheist. These are not contradictory, which is one of the many misconceptions that I'm attacking with this post. It's not a matter of dodging around with definitions, it's a matter of explaining what atheism and agnosticism really are, something that most people don't know.

Ergo the ignorant fuckage (phrased as such because I'm charming and know how to get mad views in my thread).

That's why I did the whole question thing. You're totally justified in insulting me, but at the same time I wanted to make it clear that I'm also willing to sit down and have a civil conversation. As noted by the uber-crafty King-Kong, calling you guys ignorant fucks is the fastest way to get you to vote in my poll, keep my topic alive (I'm a mere 300 and some points away from becoming an Omnipotent one, custom title and all!), and prove my point.
