But it excludes those members with no acquaintances who wish to play the game as well. And it's a lot easier for members to join on their own than to make an effort to create a team. Members ought to be allowed to compete solo at their own disadvantage.

You can make new acquaintances this way.
It may be easier for one person to join individually, but is likely enough that three people would join individually that it would be worth losing potential interaction? And even then, if three people join individually, why not just make a team together? You wouldn't have to find anybody.
I see what you mean, though, and I regret that this system "scares" off a lot of great members. The team idea was just the original goal for this project.
