I am fucking in love with NYC, I hang out in Greenwich Village all the time and would love to go to school there, NYU has all the academics I want, I have a good shot at getting in, etc. etc.
My parents have two things against NYU: 1) Safety 2) Lack of "community"
What are your thoughts on the two? I really want to be somewhere urban where I DON'T know everyone. It's so much more exciting. But anyways, they're like "We don't want you missing out on feeling like part of a community."
Thoughts on NYU's sense of community? Or what I can say to my parents?

I wish I could hang out in the village....one day. Anyway I would say go. My parents didn't want me going to London for Uni for the same reasons and i went and love it.

The safety is really not much of a problem, as long as you're not stupid about things. It's in a relatively safe area.
As for the school itself, it's overpriced and truly does lack the community. A lot of people have trouble making friends. It's a huge school and that hinders professors from getting personal. The buildings are apparently quite lacking, I've only been in the dorms but they were a bit run down and quite overpriced. Definitely apply, but make sure you visit. A lot of people apply and attend because they are so in love with the city, but quickly become disenchanted.
Something to note - NYU has the highest suicide rate of any college in the US.

My uncle attended NYU and told me that it was like a designer t-shirt, you're paying for the label and novelty rather than the quality.
They have a very nice library and bookstore though, that I can admit. With the buildings scattered all over, I could see how the sense of community could be lost.

NYU is a huge school and there is obviously so much to do in Manhattan. I guess it depends on what you want to study (if you want to go into business, Stern would be great for example), the enviornment, etc.
