I think there's a lot more to be concerned about then simply the signing of papers that marriage is (not everyone puts a host of sentimentality on it). Things that I think trump whether you're married or not:

- The length of the relationship.
- Employment status
- Mental & Physical health
- Residential considerations
- Education level/considerations

Someone could get together and get married a week later, doesn't mean anything but that's better than a couple who's been together for 8 years "common law"? ;-)
