Compulsory meal plan

So, most colleges have compulsory meal plans. That is, you must pay them, and you must eat their food.

Is there any way you can get out of this? I'm not going to be in college for another year, but I have a very particular diet (long-term, I'm NOT talking the losing weight kind) that they have little or no chance of providing for me. If they CAN provide it, theirs will be far inferior and far more expensive.

Oh god, college food is such a fucking rip off.
I suggest you get a ride to the nearest Stater Bros or something.

If you don't live on campus, usually you don't have to pay as much and you never actually HAVE to eat their food-it's just a matter of money. If you talk to the Admin, you can probably work something out though.

I'm a vegan, but I'm making the switch to raw veganism really soon (as soon as I convince my parents that I won't die if I do it). So that means I'll be eating only raw fruits, vegetables, nuts, and seeds. I am not paying $12 a meal for raw apples every day. :| I'd rather pay $3 for a huge variety.

There's no way out of it, at my school. I figure, unless you have severe allergies, and have a lawyer brought in, you're screwed.

Mine is 990$ a year. :S

i would guess that you can go talk to the dean or president or whatever of your college and tell him/her about your situation and work something out

Any school with a compulsory meal plan should have vegan/vegetarian options for every meal. If you discover this not to be the case, you have a legitimate case to make to the administration.

If they provide the options, there isn't much you can do to convince them you should be allowed to go off-plan unless you have a kitchen in your dorm, which is often unlikely as a freshman. If they DON'T provide the options, well, most schools get jumpy at the mere suggestion of the word discrimination.

But I will be a raw vegan. And if I want to have a remotely nutritionally complete diet... a meal plan won't work. Unless they have tons and tons of fresh fruits and vegetables and greens all sitting there raw, grocery store style. :P

I'm in the transitioning stages right now, though. Just regular vegan.

Check ahead. Give their dining services department a call and find out exactly what will be made available to you.

Oh, of course I'd check. But I highly doubt any colleges actually cater to raw vegans.
