Embarrassingly, wasn't this pioneered first in Britain? We've been frying Mars bars in batter for decades now, especially up north.

Those have been around for a while. The most popular is deep fried snickers. It's actually really good.

It sounds gross because you associate it with french fries, and chicken and fish.

You're all aware that fast food restaurants [at least McDonald's] fries all their fries, chicken and fish in canola oil, which is primarily used when preparing fried deserts.

Yep, used to just be a northern thing, but now they're here and there in the south too, and I know some Fish n Chips shops in Reading and Portsmouth, you can go in with a mars bar you've already bought and for 20p they stick it in the fryer for you.
