if you've downloaded some tunes, they may be in an incompatible format. most ipods get cranky that way.
or if you've made the mistake of buying songs from the itunes store or whatever, it may exert its inner dictator and not let you transfer the songs at all due to messed copy protection.

It was cute to live in 1998 three years ago, now it's olddd. I have room for about 10k. :/
Sometimes copyright issues stop iTunes from copying them on. Make sure your settings are correct, too; when you plug it in, go to the options, go to 'Music' and make sure it's all correct.
