Ive always thought about writing a story based on my great granddad's war experiences in France during the First World War.

He was a Company Sergeant Major with the Royal Engineers. He saw a lot of action and was present at a lot of battles, including the Somme. He won a medal for bravery. He met my French Great Grandmother while in France and married her. He never spoke about the war...

Prior to the great war he joined the Rifle Brigade so that he could fight in the Boer war.

It sounds like a nice story like that, but it wasn't really. He was almost 40 when he met my great grandmother, and she was 19. He was already married and had another wife back in England. My Great Grandmother was pregnant with someone else's child and she saw him as a way out and he loved her. It wasn't a nice marriage and she hated him...

I've always thought of having some story out of it, because he was a fascinating man. And for the bits I don't know Id add fictional pieces to it and such...its just the bad bits I think I should leave out...

I agree. He wouldn't be nearly so fascinating in a sterile fairytale.
