Okay this crappy Dell I have had for about 5 years now is no longer able to hold all of my stuff and I do not have the cash needed to make myself one at this time. So I am planning on investing in an external hard drive to store all my music and movies and pics.

The thing about this is I do not really know any reliable ones, and I want one that I can put the stuff on it and not have to worry about it being deleted. I have a price range of between US$100 and US$150. Cannot be more than US$150.

I need one with the following:
MUST be 500GB or over
A reliable brand name

Optional:
Comes with backing up software.

So please help me out by directing me to any sites which will have them, preferably a direct link.

We had a Western Digital MyBook Studio 500GB and that was fairly inexpensive and came with backup software and USB2.0/FW400. It would have been around $200USD new but I'm sure it's a lot cheaper by now. It worked well, was robust and had pretty lights. I didn't use the backup software with it though because I had TimeMachine  to do that for me.

The link was too long so I had to put this.

One of my friends has that one and he says it is really reliable and fast.

buy a internal and a external enclosure, put the new internal drive in your computer, reinstall windows, and put the old hard drive in the external enclosure

A 40GB external hard drive would be a waste of my time. I would rather a 500GB one.

So please do not suggest that I buy a new internal and switch it or anything of that nature. I have already decided to buy an external hard drive, I just need to figure out which is best to buy.

Well rated 500GB for $70 after rebates, $90 before.

Well rated 750GB for $130 after rebates.

That is if you wanted USB2.0 and not upgrade to eSATA.

If you want to get a 1TB drive you can do so for about $170 before shipping.
