But whether they like it or not, there is a good chance without the Catholic Church Athiesm as we know it today might not have even existed. Primarily, in the Medieval Ages Charlemagne made a series of schools which did help with general intelligence but the Church later funded larger schools for the best scholars to gather at; universities, and since they were privately owned, the Universities had the freedom to develop philosiphy as they wished. While athiesm didn't spring out instantly from this, this started the chain reaction to freedom of religion(or lack there of) and you owe it to the religious entity you hate most.

I'm not even Catholic, but I find this ironic and comical.

I think that Atheism sprung up from bad feelings from the Inquisition and oppressive nature of the Church, not its sorry excuses for "schools".

Note I said Atheism as we know it, meaning the logical arguments that reinforce it. By the way, logical arguments regarding theology came from a Dominican monk.

Wherever people perceive tyranny to be rampant, a champion arises to challenge it. Its kinda common for this to happen.

Before schools though no one realized what tyranny was.

Isn't what is means to be atheist just expanding "not believing in any religion but one" to "not believing in any religions at all"   ?

Ill admit, being able to give an action a word or conceptual meaning, does make it easier to think of and act on.

Still, people, on the most base level can separate emotions into simply good and bad.

Doesn't change my thoughts. It doesn't even really affect them.

Atheism has always existed.

It existed well before Catholicism and will exist well after it.

Atheism is knowing, absolutely positively, that there is no god.  If you are not 100% sure that there is no god, then the farthest you can go is being agnostic.

I have to say that this is pretty ridiculous. First of all, atheists who hate religion may be the loudest when it comes to expressing their lack of belief, but I highly doubt that the majority of atheists hate religion, much less solely the Catholic Church. Second, from the fact that the Church had an influence on Atheism it does not follow that without that influence Atheism wouldn't exist. There were people who could think for themselves, even then.

It is more ambiguous than that, actually. Most broad definition being the lack of a belief in god(s).

Not really. What you're describing is "hard" or "positive" atheism. Atheism itself is simply the disbelief in a deity. That's it. You can be an atheistic agnostic, you can be a "soft" atheist ("I disbelieve in the existence of a deity" rather than "there is no God"), etc. All are entirely valid forms of atheism.
