Okay, so I have this old computer that crashed a while ago. Obviously it's screwed up, and I had to try to fix it, but couldn't, so I got a new computer.

Now, I feel like messing with it. I'll try to figure out how to set it back to factory default or something, but after I get it running again, any suggestions as what I should do with it? It's running Windows XP, has 2gigs of ram, 2.4 GHz CPU Speed, and it's a pretty decent computer.

I'm thinking of using it to host game servers and such so I can leave it on all night and stuff. I don't really care what happens to it seeing as it's messed up, and I have a new computer now anyway.

Looking for serious answers too. Thanks :D

Your best option would be a fresh format and install of Windows.

Depending on what you want to use the server for you could use Linux for it.  Many dedicated servers use Linux because it is more stable for server purposes (as I have heard, not done much hosting myself, only a few things between friends).

Define crash, please? Cos if it's a software crash, all you need to do is format and reinstall an OS on the HDD...

Pfft. Why not? :P

It's been completely wiped because it crashed, so it's like having a new computer, and I can do anything I want on it. Overclock, like Lepperking said, or do what I was planning to do, or if someone comes up with something else.

Also, @ Espresso:
That's what I was thinking, wiping the computer and installing windows/Linux on it. I just needed someone to verify that Linux would be a good idea, but I've never used it before, so I don't know exactly what to expect :P

Linux is a better idea if it's for server hosting. Fewer overheads, easier to control remotely, more stable, etc...

It's running again. I got windows working seeing as I screwed with the partition in the BIOS screen, reinstalled windows, etc etc. It was a while ago so I can't remember exactly what I did, but I remember I got it running again.

Linux would be a good choice if the games you wish to be hosting have Linux server support.  Many do.

I'm talking stuff like, Battlefield 2 & 2142, and Steam games like Counter-Strike Source and Garrys Mod.

Also thinking of turning it into a remote-controllable Virtual/Slave computer. :o
