So I found a car I really want on craigslist for a decent price: A 1999 Honda Prelude with 68,000 miles for $7000! It's got a clean title, and very little damage except for a tiny bit to the bottom because the car is low to the ground. I was going to buy this car asap, but I have limited knowledge on cars and need some advice. I live in northern MN where theres snow on the ground 6 months of the year, and my friend who knows about cars said in order to saftely drive the Prelude in the winter I'd need to take off the body kit that was put on and get stock bumpers, replace the 17" black rims to stock or something else, and get rid of the new cold air intake the guy put on the car.

He said this would cost around $2000 with labor to do. Is he right on this? I'd be willing to spend up to $1000 to get this car ready to handle the winter, but I can't afford any more. Is it worth it for me, or should I look for something else then? Heres a couple pics of the actual car. Also, is this a good price to pay for the car, or should I try and go lower? Thanks!!

Your friend doesnt know much, the cold air intake wont really affect the performance.. just ask him for the stock one back if you really want to change it out i wouldnt though..

the rims wont get harmed your not going through rocks.. just slosh and salt.. and the front spoiler is the only thing i would every worry about.. but even then unless your plowing more than 3 inches of snow you dont need to worry about anything

however if i may say.. .7000 dollars for that?? thats bullshit.. unless it has a premium warrenty i would definately not..

They are out of their mind. I wouldn't pay that much for a car that's almost 10 yrs old.
It's not worth the money and time to get it snow-ready either.

Blue book lists the cars value around $9,000 in good condition so I don't think it's a bad deal, but I will try to haggle it down to $6,500 if I can. I've been looking for one of these cars for months and this is one of the best deals I've seen yet price wise, but in the description it even says 'Great summer car' so I'm worried about the winter.

Northern MN winters can get pretty brutal, and it's not like I'll be out driving after a foot blizzard but if it starts to snow here for an hour or two it can accumulate to 3 inches worth. I'm going to college this year and on a tight budget after I buy a car, so I want something that'll last me a few years that I won't have to spend much on besides normal maintnence.

No need for different rims, just wax them to keep them from corroding.

Will possibly need different tires if they have summer tires on them.

Body kit and ride height should be fine. Only if you actually drive unplowed roads would you need to worry, and if thats the case a truck would work better for you.

The cold air intake won't need to be removed.

Your friend is an idiot, and if you don't know much about cars then pass on this. Seriously

Just get some decent tires (maybe on cheap steel wheels) and it should handle well enough.  Just don't drive into any large snow mounds and the body kit will be fine.

You must not know a damn thing about Preludes, or hondas in general. Very reliable, sports-oriented little cars that hold their value well. Go check the KBB on them.

Also, for the maker of the thread.. if you get this, make sure you get a set of cheap wheels (steel even) with winter tires on them.. this will be fine in the winter even with the body kit. There's far lower cars that are used in snow (Volvo, BMW, Chevy Corvettes.. Tampons, I mean tempos.. you name it.)

check out tirerack.com for cheap package pricing on winter wheel/tire kits.

That kit is one of the cleanest I've seen for a prelude, love the rims too.

If you can afford i would go for it.

buy the car how it is, and tell the owner to go fuck him self 2k for shit you can get from your local junkyard for next to nothing.

So basically i would say is, go to a junkyard get some cheap tires that will last you the winter and get your self a cold intake(which isn't expensive) and you will be set for the winter, just be careful for unplowed roads though.

BTW what prelude model is this?
