If you are really short on money right now you could go to a community college for a few years and then transfer to a larger university or college.  If you really want to move away from home you can go to a community college that is not within community distance from your current home.
About the studying in an exotic place.  You should contact the study abroad office at any colleges that are close by.  They should be able to tell you about different options for studying in another country.  Some study abroad options are more expensive than studying in the U.S. but some are cheaper.  You should look into it and perhaps you can do that in a few years.

2.6 GPA and no extra curriculars?  Not only are you probably not getting into an ivy (unless perhaps your parents went there) but I would say that you should shape up before even thinking of NYU.

i have the same thing w/ my parents, I want to go to HPME @ Northwestern, they only want Harvard.  not only that

make a deal with them--tell them how much you detest them controlling your life, and say you'll apply to the ivy, but have them let you apply EA/ED to NYU, your chances will be much better.

there is a surprising amount of fin. aid out there, so you shouldn't make your decision based on it.

stick to your strengths but make sure you look well rounded.  the majority of good schools won't take a look at your freshman year grades (i found out from a yale admissions officer--shhh, it's a secret), so your GPA should be higher.  PM if you need, i've read so many books on the college admissions process that i've had people come to me instead of our school's CCRC--college & career resource center.

HA--stupid school, you lose.

Do what you can. Go to a smaller school as suggested, and work your way up. YOu could always just take your general ed classes at a community college and have those done / out of the way for a ton cheaper, then get into where you want to be. Also, be sure you take the ACTs, and, depending on NYU's requirements, the SAT/SAT IIs. Where there's a will, there's a way. Your parents want the best for you, and realistically they will not get off your case until you do the right thing for you. Talk to them, if they won't be reasonable then you are better off doing things on your own.

I think your best best would be a community college like Kira said.  If you want to get into a good, larger university, but are short on cash that will help you out.  If you do good bring up your GPA when you go to transfer, and when the financial situation straightens out you'll be all ready to go, and hopefully be accepted.

One the classic fights I had with my mom about what school I should go to- only it was more the opposite.  She didn't want me to leave home and go to a more expensive college. She wanted me to live at home and commute to the community college.  I just told her that I hated that school, thier computer programs, and thier professors (I knew some people that had went there for Computer Graphics).  I worked my butt off to get scholarships and to go to the school that I've been wanting to go since freshmen year; which is Ohio University (yea, yea #2 party school, but that's not why I wanted to go there).  I thought I didn't get in because it had been almost 2 months since I'd applied, so I was ready to apply to other schools (ended up only applying to St. Francis School of Art in IN.).  Christmas Eve I'd gotten my acception letter in the mail and I was estactic!  It took my mom a lil longer to be happy about it... but I don't mind.

What I'm trying to say, is apply to the schools you and what your parents want you to apply to.  Also, you never know exactly if you will be accepted until you apply.  My friend applied to OU with 2.4 gpa and thought it would be impossible. And yes, she got accepted.  She was smart, she had a backup college just in case that didn't work out.

NYU typically doesn't take anyone under a 3.5... and the majority of people are in the top 10% of their class which is about a 3.9 at lowest in most cases.

Not to put you down or anything, but you're going to have to REALLY bring your GPA up to even consider applying there unless you have a 2400 on the SAT or something.

You need to pull your grades up before studying abroad. Most programs won't take you unless you have a 3.0 and others won't take you unless you have a 3.5. Plus, it's hard to get scholarships for them. It's possible, but you'd have to be very statistically competitive with GPA and classes and such.

I got to NYU and I am not a genius by any means.  Dreams can come true.  I never reported my sat score to NYYU cause it was BAD!  But they took me in anyway and I am having a wonderful time here.  I forgot to tell you guys I was a college dropout.  (NYU does not know that either.)

A 2.6 GPA & you want to go to NYU?

The only way to do this is to spend this summer at a community college and take different credits like biology, calculus etc.

As for me, I don't know yet..
My GPA is 3.83 with 1 AP =(
