For those who don't know or haven't seen an MSN virus before, they spread by spamming malicious links or files to your MSN contacts, and to your contacts' contacts, and so on. Most of these spammed messages are designed to evoke curiosity, e.g. "Is this you? <link>", "Can i put this pic of you into my new myspace album? <link>" or "Omg! Have you seen Britney's new look? <Request to accept download of .jpg or .zip file, etc>", but a link by itself is probably just as common:

The following precautions can help you avoid getting these viruses:

  • Similar to email attachments, do not click on links or accept files you weren't expecting.
  • If you haven't spoken to a certain MSN contact in a while and they suddenly send you a link or a file, it's probably malicious.
  • Is the link in context? If you were talking about what you had for dinner and your contact sends you a link that doesn't look food related, don't click on it.
  • If the link or filename is a bunch of seemingly random/obscure letters or words, e.g. IMG-0012.zip or http:/ /www.un ixxkpv.info, don't click on it.
  • If you haven't heard of the website before, don't click on it.

Remember, if you're not sure whether the link is malicious or not, just ask your MSN buddy what the link is before you click on it. If they don't answer or they tell you they have a virus, then you shouldn't click on the link. A simple message can be easily automated, but a response to an open-ended question cannot.

Think you have an MSN virus? Follow these steps:
    1. Uninstall MSN.
    2. Log on to http://www.hotmail.com and change your password.
    3. Download a free anti-virus if you don't have one or if the one you have isn't doing the job. You can download a free version of AVG anti-virus here.
    4. Boot your PC in safe mode (do this by tapping F8 or F12 as your computer is booting), update your anti-virus and run a full system scan.
    5, Reinstall MSN.

    Malicious links and filenames:
    http:// [hotmail username].dat syou.com
    http:/ /www.un ixxkpv.info
    http:/ /www.jnb wryqo.us
    http:/ /www.vrsg qmny.us

Free free to contribute to this list, and don't forget to leave spaces in the links so people won't accidentally click them.

If you're dumb enough to click a link like that, you deserve the virus it brings.
