Sometimes it's insecurity. Sometimes it's how a person was raised. It's the classic "Nature vs. Nurture" argument. Why do some people turn out gay and some people turn out straight? No one knows. However, if gayness is something that can be genetic, why not homophobia?
I disagree. I think it's always about insecurity, whether it's because you've been raised in a world where everyone's always been straight and are suddenly exposed to it, or if you've been taught in church that it's wrong and totally sinful and see that some of the nicest and most caring people you meet are anything other than straight. The homophobes are uncomfortable with the idea of something being other than they think it should be, and react extremely to it, mentally or physically (or sometimes emotionally; I've seen it, and it's downright weird). And I am talking about the real homophobia, not the moderate stance of disagreement with it. These people are just disturbed that someone can be different from them in unexpected, peaceful ways, and that's cracked thinking, and that's why it's just stupid.

The Bible, also poses a cause for the homophobia. A misinterpretation of a few paragraphs leading to much pain and fear.
