I am going to be a New RA this coming semester at my univeristy.  I am curious about something... I realize that most RAs are just doing their job and honestly, no one wants to bust people for alcohol. It seems to be more trouble for the rA than its worth.

But my question is:  Honestly, are you more likely to bust a resident for alcohol whom you DISlike or have other problems with?  Not like you're "trying" to look for them or something,, but if the opportunity was present would you perhaps give them less slack than another person? (like someone you dont even know)

And also...can RAs call the police if they know of house parties off campus? Or an anonomous call?

Well, the question is not what we would do, but what you're going to do. You're the only one who knows that at this point.

focus on being a lax RA and you'll have a much better experience being one. Residents will make ur life hell if u act crazy strict. Most RAs only bust people when they have to - say their position is at stake, but other than that they just want the free housing

Don't listen to this one. Focus on being a GOOD RA. Follow your contract, and do what you're expected, and you'll do fine.

Residents will make ur life hell if u act crazy strict.

Sure, if you're baby sitting two year olds. But this is college. College students, in Housing, have a Contract to follow, just as much as the RA's. They expect the rules to be followed, just as much as the RA's.

Or when the contract calls for it. They're expected to follow the rules, just as much as the residents. You cannot, as an RA, nor a Resident, pick and choose the parts of a contract to follow. It's all or none.

say their position is at stake, but other than that they just want the free housing

If they're in it for the freebies, they're not in it for the right reasons. That's like taking a Dentist's job because of the pay. Do it because you enjoy it, not because of the payoff.

Maybe I'm just lucky in that I didn't really dislike anyone. I suppose I less-liked the people who got in trouble, but that's mainly because I thought their choices were stupid. As an RA, I never went out looking for people to get in trouble (and anyhow, when I did get someone in trouble on my hall I felt bad, because I knew that their choices could potentially get them kicked out of the dorms, which sucks).

The entire hall knows when someone gets busted, and they tend to blame it on me (whether I was even there to bust them or not), so picking on someone because I don't like them would have just bit me in the ass with the rest of the hall anyway.

In all my years as an RA I really tried never to play favorites. the rules are the rules, and there were times I had to bust friends too.

You should really try not to allow your personal feelings to affect how you enforce the rules.

No.

As an RA, I did not bust people I disliked, or liked. I busted people that broke the rules. Period.
