would you consider this social suicide? am i doomed to have no friends?

it wasn't even my first choice, actually it was my last. i had a single junior year in high school (went to boarding school) and i hated it. i'm not a social person in general so i wanted a roommate so at least i'd have someone to eat with the first week (and yes i know, i could have had a roommate i hated) or talk to at night instead of being alone in my room for hours at a time.

what are your thoughts?

No. You can just as easily be social with a single room as without one.

Hm, that's an interesting thought.

At first I didn't want roomates, but now that you mention it, who the hell would I talk to without them?

Luckily for me, I'm going to a university that doesn't have traditional dorms; we have little townhouses, and about 5 people live in each house.

It'll be fine. Just focus on the pro's instead of the con's, and seek out some nice people in a few of your classes to make friends with. Make it a goal to talk to one new person every day, and before you know it you'll have a ton of friends, plus a private dorm room to boot.

Townhouses rock, even if your roomie sucks, you still have 3/4 chances of liking the other people in the other rooms.

my first choice was the 6 person suite style, like 3 doubles that shared a bathroom. i really didn't want to be in the dorm they put me in because the bathrooms are absolutely disgusting. we stayed in the dorm during orientation.

and i went through this whole ordeal with the college about my housing this year because i took a gap year and they kept having "glitches in admissions" and cancelling my housing and they couldn't even manage to take a look at the housing sheet i filled out. a single in this dorm was my last choice of all possible choices. seriously.

It sucks so much having a single but it isn't social suicide at all. Just put yourself out there and you'll be fine.

Singles are fine. Just keep your door open on the first day and play loud music, and you'll be good. People will come see what's going on, and then you can chat.
