That's concurrent sentences, right? Or the other one?
One legal system makes you serve all your sentences one after the other (this sentence is obviously a result of being judged using this system), to give a sense of 'fairness'. It's effective in some cases of serial murder, so that they can have a 60year sentence or something.
The other system makes you do all your sentences at the same time, so that you can serve 20years in jail for sentences of 8, 10 and 20 years each, and be let out at the end of it.

This would have been a better one to charge them with, if at all.

Actually when the girls body was recovered it was noted that she was covered in bruises and suffered major brain damage. The size and shape of the inflictions matched that of Samirs rifle
