Depends on where you live at, what type teaching you do (whether it be Public, Private, or University,) and how long you've taught for. The average salary is going to be anywhere between $35,00 - $60,000 per year, which is a lot of money if you live on your own, or have a very small family such as a child. I mean, you can easily live off that amount per year, if you budget right etc...

The AFT teacher salary survey for the 2004-05 school year found that the average teacher salary was $47,602, a 2.2 percent increase from the previous year.

Keep in mind that teachers also often work 9-10 hour days. They arrive before the morning bell, spend the 6 hours at school with you, then anywhere from 1-3 hours after school prepping and grading. So the pay is pretty bad considering.
