satan was made up by the roman catholics. he was taking from parts of gods from other religions and put together as Satan. 
Secular scholarship suggests that the Christian conception of Satan arose out of perversions to the preexistent Jewish idea by Zoroastrianism during the exilic period. Regardless, the concept of Satan is fairly developed both in the New Testament and the early church, long before Catholics came on to the scene.
