Yeah, I'm catholic, but my life is much simpler than that. The statues are only supposed to be of people who were good in the bible, some believe that having them in their homes is a way of inviting good things or like showing your respects or something ( you can see where I don't pay to much attention in church can't you? lol) ANd I have a hard time with the whole bible thing. The bible was written by a man who claims to have spoken with God, not by God himself. So yeah, I can see where's it's all confusing.

well im not exactly catholic but went to a catholic school and studied catholicism: - confession is good cuz it can allow you to let out what your really feeling anonymously instead of bottling it up and sacrementally it is a forgiveness and confession of your sins to god - the saints are those who have followed JEsus and are blessed by god, they pray to them so they can give them strength to follow in their footsteps (someone like Mother Teresa who will probably be given sainthood) - Statues is just to show their love lol i dunno actually about that - Jesus is the only child of God yes? - In the bible it says mary was inpregnated by the holy spirit, this is no different in any other sect of christianity - Crossing themselves is just like how you start a prayer, its just a tradition
Okay but youre only supposed to confess sins to God because he's the only one who can grant forgiveness, not a priest. You're not supposed to pray to anyone except for God/Jesus Jesus has brothers and sisters What is the point of crossing yourself? I dont understand that.

ok here we go....catolics do not worship mary they olny pray to her becaue she is marys mother... I am baptist i do not believe to pray to mary. God gave mary the baby so he could live a human life and die on the cross for us. YOu should olny confess things to the one and olny all powerful god
Wrong. We only pray to Mary and the Saints because they can intervene with God for us, thus making our prayer stronger, in a sense. In other words, made much more simpler... we're asking them to pray for us, so we don't pray to them. It's kind of like talking to a dead relative, I guess. Statues is only symbolic. We don't worship them. We only look at them as a reminder and even as an art piece at times. Why do we have crosses? It's a reminder of what Jesus did for us on the cross. Confession is pretty much an old tradition of the church. In a way, it's symbolic in it's own way. What you're asking for forgiveness over is between you, the priest, and God. The priest pretty much is like a therapist and is your "go-between". We never said Jesus was the only son... even my priest will tell you there's a great possibility that there are more kids that Mary and Joseph had. There's suggestions of that in the Bible. Mary's a virgin. Jesus was conceived by the Holy Spirit/Ghost, which is a miracle in itself. How do other Christians view that (never thought to ask non-Catholics about that one, myself, as I have thought this was rather universal throughout all Christians). We cross ourselves because of it's like a makeshift cross that reminds us of what Jesus did on the cross for us. For more detailed answer and such: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sign_of_the_cross Catholics just have a LOT of tradition and a LOT of symbolism on how some of our traditions became to be. When you're in college and take an Art History class, you'll realize that.

so you need a dead person whose bones have allready disentigrated into dust to talk to god for you? seems sorta asinine to pray at all then. the crossing is just as much a reminder of the original cross as it is an invocation for protection and guidance and why do i need a go-between to confess my "sin" Post edited at 12:22 am on July 24, 2008 by Nevorom

That explained quite a lot, thanks. I'm alittle confused about the confessing thing because there's not supposed to be a go between with you and God... but whatever. Another question, why do you consider yourselves not holy enough to read the Bible?
