I am 17, obviously living with my parents, and I have an income of roughly $1200 a month after taxes...I am saving to have a cushion when I move out...I would like to have a little spending money as well, but that is beside the point...

what would you do? once I move out, I'm going to move into an apartment w/ my best friend, and my fiance...we will probably split it to one paying rent, one paying utilities, and one paying groceries...I want to have enough just in case someone gets laid off, or if we get injured...what should I do? the savings would be over an 11 month period, so it is from $1200 to $11,000 that would be saved...what should I do?

This depends on if you have bills. If you don't have any bills:

$500.00 Savings, $100.00 Checking.

For a normal person this is unrealistic, but if your parents take care of your gas for your car and your phone etc, it is definitely doable.

The way you are going to be splitting it up is going to be not the smartest way. Who ever gets groceries is the best deal, I would do all of it three ways, and I would try to save as much as possible.

$250 savings, $350 checking. Provided you have bills/pay for gas.

If you dont have to pay for your cellphone, or gas, then keep more in your savings.

I agree- have all the household expenses pooled as far as value and then split the bills 3 ways. Where you live, can you deduct a portion of rent from income tax? If so, the gov't will need receipts or you get no benefit. IF everyone's name is on the lease, everyoen is responsible for the contract. Let's say you only - or maybe you and your GF- sign the lease. YOu friend decides in 6 months he is going to move out (the reason doesn't matter) - you'd be on the hook to the landlord for his portion. Also, you'd ahve to provide him receipts for his portion, which is not a big problem.

And I'd suggest that you and your GF pay for your own food and your freind, for his own. Maybe even each individually. I don't know of any roomie-type issue that causes as much friction as "HEY! Who ate all the (whatever)?!" As well, you may have 1 or 2 who eat a lot of junk or convenience food which costs a lot more than "real" food. It's unfair for the 3rd person to subsidise the other 2. 3 way slpit might work for stuff like mil and bread but sooner or later someone will resent an imbalance -real or perceived - in food expenditures.

we will probably split it to one paying rent, one paying utilities, and one paying groceries...
Not really a good idea. Those most likely won't be equal and except for rent, will probably not be the same from month to month.

The best method is to determine the total cost for everything and divide it by the number of tenants.

If you have to estimate, then estimate, the point is, you tally up an amount and everyone pays 1/x of that amount, x being the number of tenants.

If the amount is short the first month, then fucking add the difference and divide that by x. Let everyone know you'll do this, after the first two months you'll have an absolutely solid understanding of how much food should be bought and how much everything is, and it'll be easy and you won't create rifts from unfair living arrangements.

I know that this method works because I've been in a condo where it was used.

Also, don't have a "food guy" that is just fucked up, everyone buys food and everyone splits the cost of everything.
