Desktop any day. portability is nice, but you don't get the same power, storage, or close to my heart, screens. I find laptops OK for quick jobs or browsing, e-mail, IM etc... but when it comes down to getting some work done the keyboards aren't great, touch pads aren't as nice to use, the whole thing is slower than the PC.

Oh, here I just have to completely disagree with you. The portability of the laptop is its greatest advantage over the desktop. As you surely know (you must), there are great notebooks out there with great hardware specifications. As for storage, you can always take remote storage. I have seen a lot of crappy laptop keyboards, but there are descent ones as well. If you so much dislike them, you can change it with a better one. As for the touchpad, you can always get a small wireless or bluetooth mouse if you can't use the touchpad. I find the laptop screens better to work with than most computer screens (be they CRT or TFT). If size is a problem, there are always bigger notebooks. So, right now, having eliminated all your worries, where is your desktop? Perhaps it is better for work? Yes, it is. If you sit in the same chair every day. With a notebook you can work wherever you wish, and as I mentioned, I don't think the hardware specifications would be a problem. The portability of the laptop puts it ahead of the desktop. Plus, now a days, you can have Internet virtually anywhere. There are also longer lasting batteries, car chargers, etc. Anyway. I am also a fan of desktops, but laptops are better.

Im running a quad core machine with 4 gig of RAM, two fairly high end graphics cards and 3 monitors and over a TB or very secure and well backed up storage. You just can't do half of that with a laptop. Yes, you can replace keyboards, although normally with others by the same manufacturer that made the first one, so you still have the same problems you probably did in the first place. For example, most people get annoyed by three things with a keyboards, it's size, key travel and angle. The first two a new keyboard will not solve as it still has to fit into the same place, the final is unrelated and only solved as such with wrist rests and stands. Yes, again you can carry around yet more storage with you and you can carry a mouse, although this just adds to the list of things you need to take with you. And as for screens, they are getting better, although i wish manufactures would stop putting that damn reflective surface on them, its great for watching DVD's, but fails so badly with any light on it. Don't get me wrong, laptops are great and i do have and use one all the time, i travel a fair bit, but they are not for getting real work done in my mind, they are still just for browsing and tinkering. A lot of students use them as their main machine and i do feel for them. There are so many trade-offs for having something you can move easily. Even just the fact that you the laptop is lifted off the desk and normally flat, so you have to lift your hands up, and kinda drop your fingers down onto the keyboard to type. This is not nearly as comfortable as a desk. Oh, and as a side note about the comment about being able to take them anywhere and do work on it, most still have sub 3 hours battery life under real work conditions.
