I think that they work until they don't work anymore, just like short-distance relationships. Eventually something can drive you apart, but the same thing happens in relationships that are close by you.

Edit: So basically I wouldn't discourage you from being in one if you were really connected to someone

Long-distance relationships that started as a long distance thing generally doesn't succeed in the long run.

In any other situations the outcomes vary depending on the situation and the relationship.

The only long distance relationships that shouldn't be too much of a problem is a short-term long distance relationship (i.e. summer break from university).
