"Gunna" isn't internet slang, but it's what you say when talking out loud.
Despite that, it's far from standard English, which is what should be written on any essay.
Failing a paper for one single word, though, does seem to be overreacting a bit, however, you have to be pretty dumb to not catch yourself using the word "gonna" instead of going to, even if you're typing the paper up at the last minute. Things like that are extremely easy to catch without even proofreading your paper.
Remember kids, the number one rule for essays is no contractions. Even if it might seem silly to type out "is not" instead of isn't, it is still better to go with the former since it undoubtedly follows the universal rules of standard English. If you get in the habit of eliminating contractions in every essay you write, accidentally throwing in slang contractions like "gonna" will never happen without you noticing it as you type it.
