I have a proposition. This may not be the exact thing I'm going for, but it's a start, and I think that this, or what it could be built into, could help the system. Here it is:

Support Leader applications require a nomination.

The nomination will not force them to become one, so they still have to work for it themselves. They make the replies, and they write the application. But they'd require a little more to show that their support isn't limited to merely those 10 replies; that they'd continue to use the status for which it was designed.

Perhaps this would require another Support Leader to vouch for them, and put their name on the line. Perhaps this is simply someone they'd really helped out. That's up for debate. But I feel this would help to weed out those who are simply doing it for the badge and/or the moderation abilities, and get people who are truly deserving to be promoted.

Thoughts?

I think it would be a great idea. Half the support leaders on here aren't even supportive.

so we're turning this into a popularity contest rather than a demonstration of ability?

a member that's under the radar but puts out quality replies is much preferred to one that spams and tries to amuse their nominators. I think the whole application system is sufficient, no need to throw in another layer

I really don't think this will help at all. If anything, I see it eliminating great SLs who don't want to seek out a sponsor.

I think the app is fine as it is, really.

you can "really" help out people and be simply doing it for the badge....a third party can't judge the member's intent any better than a moderator can...

It makes sense, and I can see it working... but I just think back to when I started out, and I wonder if anyone would have known me or whether they would have vouched for me.  I suppose after a point, I may have been able to, but I just wonder how long it may have taken...

But then again, like you said, that gets you the people that really WANT to be an SL, and not just have the status.

It's not a popularity contest. That's why where the nomination comes from would be tweaked, and this idea built upon to prevent that. This is a starting point.

Yes you can. I've done it before.

Same.  Members around here will do anything they're told, basically.  "Hey, look, I posted go to the doctor on your thread, nominate me please, I'll give you 3 points!" "SURE THING BUDDY!"

Not to mention the obvious problem of creating secondary accounts to nominate themselves.  They can just reactivate the ones they used to refer a friend. :P

Then it could be another SL that needs to nominate them, and perhaps a penalty for frivilous nominations. Or hell, even a mod.

This would keep out those that just want the power and the badge, since inactivity does not seem to be reason to demote.

If the mod is going to nominate the member, they can just accept the application.....

From my view, you're making this complex for absolutely no reason.

I still don't see it impacting the level of support here.  I don't think members apply simply for the move topic and remove post ability - I think gradually, over time, it develops into that, but that it's RARELY the motivating factor behind wanting SL status.

Also, as you know, SLs are actively being demoted for inactivity, ADMO log shows such demotions.
