Ah, this is the big question that everyone is pondering about.  No one really knows the true answer to this question, however there are multiple theories on this.

Personally, I don't think that nice guys always lose.  However, they definitely do lose more than the attractive jerks.

I think it's merely for social status.  If you take a look at the students at a regular high school in today's society, you will notice that the more attractive and outgoing students are considered the "popular" ones.  Whereas, the not so attractive students and rather shy students are usually off to the side somewhere.

All of the attention gives these people an ego and therefore it is extremely easy to become conceited and therefore be considered a jerk.  However, this doesn't happen in all cases.

I mean, I know many popular, attractive and outgoing people who are also very nice.  It really depends on the individual and not so much on the stereotype.
